Meadows, a staff writer for Universal Music Publishing Nashville, has a voice that resides somewhere between Bon Jovi, Bruce Springsteen, Marc Broussard and a few more soulful, rootsy rockers. So it’s hard to pigeonhole Meadows as a “country” writer; he’s definitely got few great ballads that work within the country framework-and a couple up-tempos that could lend an ear to, say, Jack Ingram-but he’s got plenty to offer alternative genres as well. And being a good singer and an artist in his own right certainly doesn’t hurt his applicability. But on to another, broader question: Wouldn’t it be nice if more publishers took it upon themselves to put out records themselves and take part in the artist development (where an artist exists) process? Kudos to UMPG for beginning what hopefully will be a new standard for publishers in the biz.
