Ward, the “Him” behind the duo’s first collaboration, Volume One. Deschanel’s voice possesses the sweet yet upbeat stylings of Jenny Lewis and the enticing rawness of Cat Power. Ten out of 12 songs belong to the indie actress turned songstress (covers are of The Beatles’ “Should Have Known Better” and Smokey Robinson’s “You Really Got a Hold on Me”). Each of the tracks oscillate between ‘50s doo-wop and classic country, courtesy of Ward’s impeccable production talents. Steel guitars, vintage-like percussion, and intricate mastering create Jackie DeShannon meets Roseanne Cash in this successful partnership.
