Taylor has really created something special with the T5. The uniquely placed pickups, in particular, contribute to the wide range of tones achievable through the T5. There are two stacked humbucker pickups, one of which is located on the bridge, while the other is hidden underneath the fret board. The third pickup is a body sensor. The three control knobs adjust volume, treble and bass. Both tone controls are active (not passive), allowing a boost or cut of the EQ.

The true beauty of this instrument, aside from the gorgeous wood finish, is the versatility and range of its voices. There are five different pickup combinations-all controlled by a 5-way switch. The array of tonal possibilities is easily recognizable, even to an amateur musician, when you begin moving positions with the 5-way switch.

When plugged into an acoustic amp or PA, your ears quickly remind you of that warm Taylor sound. If you isolate the bridge humbucker pickup, you can plug into a Marshall Amp with a high-gain overdrive pedal…and let it rip.

The best way to reap of all the benefits from the T5 is to run through a simple A/B box, which allows you to switch back and forth between either the house PA or an acoustic amp, and your electric rig. You simply won’t be able to achieve the acoustic possibilities by running into an electric amp because you’ll lose the high range of tonal voices.

Because of its thin body, you wont find yourself with a sore back after a gig, and when running through an electric rig, you can really utilize the sustain capabilities from the hollow body. The neck plays like an electric, and the body feels like an acoustic. With this instrument, you might find yourself asking, “Which one is it?”
