Audio-Technica > AT2020 USB Cardioid Condenser Microphone
List Price: $229.00
Rating: Rocking
I was sitting around laughing with friends recently about convincing some really out of the loop guy into trading an original RCA 77 for one of those blue ball mics that glow, i.e. a magic orb. The final punch line was that it didn’t even have a three prong cable—just a USB out. And what do I get to review next? A USB out-only mic…Murphy’s Law
Here’s the difference: The Audio Technica 2020 USB is freaking awesome. For anyone who likes to podcast, or really any digital audio work, one great dilemma is mic-to-computer. The most affordable option has been a budget line digital converter with a Chinese mic pre. So frankly—in that scenario—no matter what mic you use, it will be colored by the pre and converter you are running it through.
It makes complete sense that there is a USB mic that delivers a quality signal, bypasses the entire digital converter box pre idea altogether, and is extremely affordable too. Here are some specifications for the 2020; this cardioid condenser mic features a fixed-charge back plate, permanently polarized condenser a 20-16,000 Hz frequency response, side-address studio condenser with USB digital output (Windows/Mac compatible).
Crystal clear, natural sound for podcasting, home studio recording, field recording, and voiceover use Custom-engineered low-mass diaphragm provides extended frequency response and superior transient response Cardioid polar pattern reduces pickup of sounds from the sides and rear, improving isolation of desired sound source.
It exhibits low self-noise—perfectly suited for sophisticated digital recording equipment—and includes a tripod desk stand, pivoting stand mount, USB cable and storage pouch.
I suppose I do need to mention that there is a cool blue light in this one too. So if you convince anyone to trade you a ribbon mic for this magic orb, the trade will actually be pretty decent. The AT2020 is a perfect gift for anyone getting into home recording but doesn’t have the initial start up cash.

I am in a very big dilemma. Should I buy this stand-alone mic, or buy the classic AT2020 with pre-amp. Can you help me?
Buy a Shure sm57 and an m audio pre. This mic is a toy and you should never buy a mic with anything but a 3 prong xlr cable, unless it’s a 60′s EV with a 4 prong and that’s gonna be a while for you buddy. My mom always says “keep it simple sugar”.
