Fender’s Billy Corgan Stratocaster
Fender recently announced the latest addition to their line of artist signature models—a Stratocaster designed by Smashing Pumpkins frontman Billy Corgan. The model was sparked by Corgan’s desire for a guitar of “his own,” after his “greatest go-to guitar” was stolen in 1991.
The guitar’s unique specifications definitely reflect Corgan’s unique style. Corgan stuck with the Strat’s signature three single-coil pickups, but chose high-gain, custom wound DiMarzio. Other special features include jumbo frets, a string-through hardtail bridge, and satin finish. The guitar comes in either black or Olympic White and includes a deluxe Fender tweed case.
Corgan believes that the tone of the instrument is what really makes it stand out from other Strats. “The versatility of this instrument is what impresses me and is why I’m really excited about this model,” he said. “This guitar has both a Strat articulation and enough low-end heavy metal sound to get the ‘Sabbath’ out of the guitar I want.”
The Smashing Pumpkins were one of the more prominent bands to come out of the alt-rock movement of the late ‘80s and early ‘90s. They broke genre barriers and achieved mainstream success through the releases of such albums as Siamese Dream and Melon Collie and the Infinite Sadness. The Pumpkins broke up in 2000, but have since reunited for future recording and touring.
