Where 2007’s Friend Opportunity saw San Francisco outfit Deerhoof at their most concise, able to compact all their deconstructive tendencies into a petite yet dense masterpiece, their ninth LP Offend Maggie is a return to their signature sprawling decadence. As experimental as ever, Maggie skips from John Dieterich’s brutal, off-kilter guitar phrasings on opener “The Tears and Music of Love,” to the unnerving “Basket Ball Get Your Groove Back” that plays like a lyrical exercise delivered with punk abandon. Once again a four-piece since the recent inclusion of guitarist Ed Rodriguez, Deerhoof remain deliriously unkempt and at new peaks.
