Don’t let lyrics like “f@#$ Bush and f@#$ this war” deceive you. With her little-girl voice and sing-along songs, it was only a matter of time before Kimya Dawson got around to recording a children’s record. On her first album since nudging the mainstream with the Juno soundtrack last year, Dawson makes music for the world’s hippest toddlers. Alphabutt isn’t really all that different than the music she makes for their parents-just replace songs about dying moms and cheating boyfriends with ones about sleepy monsters and farting gorillas. A chorus of kids joins Dawson on many of the tracks (most of them feature animals, but there are a couple about smoothies and “Pee-Pee in the Potty”), yet Alphabutt is as sparingly performed, wobbly sung and awkwardly engaging as her grown-up material.
