American Songwriter’s annual Nov/Dec CD compilation focused on our favorite indie-leaning artists of 2008. Standout’s include track opener The Whispertown 2000, Canadian rockers Land of Talk, Nashville’s own Old Crow Medicine Show, and My Morning Jacket’s “Librarian,” which finds Jim James’ spooking the halls of the public library.

The last track on the compilation, Justin Townes Earle’s “Turn Out My Lights,” was recorded live in American Songwriter’s Nashville office, engineered by Brian Threlkeld. Two tracks on the compilation were included as winners of the Craft of Music Vol. 3 Song Placement Contest. Congratulations to Jonny Fritz and Nick Pagliari. The full track listing - including the album title, songwriter and publisher - is copied below. Feel free to drop us a line about your favorite (or least favorite) pick in the comments section.

This is a confusing lyric– It’s sounds like a love story , but at the same time, it’s a mystery hidden in the words Like a affair that started in the summer and maybe a child with brown eyes was conceived — the truth of the matter is, I can’t understand what this is about is it about nature ia it about love, is it just up to the readers minf to make it what they want to make it

The first thing that stood out was the typo or incorrect use of the word “then” in the second stanza, which should be “than”. I could be misinterpreting the message though, which is ambiguous to say the least.

The reference to “bovine eyes” suggests it relates to an animal (i.e. cow, buffalo, antelope) , or having the instinct or intuitive ability that such an animal would possess.

“Held him down and let him eat” would seem to indicate the feeding of a young one, possibly separated from its mother or on its own.

Probably way off here so I’ll just say it’s a melancholy love story and leave it at that.
