No Doubt will be returning to the road to perform together in 2009 while they finish up their new studio album.

The idea was revealed through an instant message transcript posted on their official website but did not announce any specific details.

“I have cabin fever. Maybe we should play some shows or something,” guitarist Tom Dumont wrote. Lead singer Gwen Stefani answered, “I think we should go out now. I don’t think we should wait. Pack up the babies and get a bunch of nannies. So fun! Would be so inspiring to get out there and play all those songs again.”

The conversation continues by saying how writing music on the road would be inspiring and decides to inform their management about the plan.

No Doubt has been in the studio off and on throughout 2008 but since Stefani just gave birth to her second son in late August, her input has been sporadic.

The group hasn’t performed together in over four years and hasn’t had a new studio album since 2001’s Rock Steady. But they have separately done solo work with Stefani’s two critically acclaimed albums and the other members doing some solo and session work, along with some producing.
