[...] I just took “Miami, My Amy” to Keith as we were friends. He and I even wore the same size boot. A friend of mine in Oklahoma made me a nice pair of boots. Keith told me he loved my boots. I told Keith Whitley, “Give me a number one song and I’ll give them to you.” He tried them on and they fit perfectly. I told him we may have that song right here for your new boots and we sang it to him! He recorded it. Keith got a new pair of boots a little while later when that song went up to No. 1 on the charts! It knocked me out as he and I were great friends. It really got to me when he passed. Read the full interview. [...]

I'm an old friend of Hank's from 'back in the day." I remember being on the 1st Legend when Glenn Martin burst onto the boat, waking us up proclaiming he had a "great idea for a song that only Hank could finish under the circumstances." Sleepily we asked what song & Glenn said, "It's not love but it ain't bad." That got Hank's attention, "No, no. 'It's not Love but It's not bad' - not ain't." Well, we rolled out, dressed and went to Red Lobster for shrimp and Bloody Marys. I wrote the lyrics down on a cocktail napkin. We left and went to my place, The Creek House." There Hank & Glenn finished the song. We got a phone call saying "Hag's (Merel Haggard) flying in tomorrow morning to record." Hank met him at the airport, captured him & took him to boat where we shoved off and went out on Old Hickory Lake with Hag as our captive and Hank pictched him the song. There's a very good reason Hank was known as the best song-plugger in Nashivlle. Once Hag decided he had to record "It's Not Love," e went back to the dock, drove to the studio, Columbia B, Hag cut the song that later was released as the single off that album. Tell Hank I've been trying to reach him since I heard about his cancer & ask him if he still remembers when "we found it" so many years ago. Ask Suzi if she still remembers my going to the book-signing for her. Give them my love. Ruth (or as Hank used to introduce me, "Ruth, of Bible Fame."

Thanks for the great memories. I was on that 1970s tour with you and Willie, it was incredible. I was on the boat many times in the Bahamas and was suppose to be on the trip where Wille got busted but had a change of plans at the last minute and did not go. You taught me many lessons on philosphy of life . I owe you a debt that I can never repay for your generoisty and kindness. Although we have not crossed paths in many years you are a true friend. Each time I hear one of your songs it brings back those great times and my eyes begin to leak.
Love you, Pat
