Best Breakup Songs: American Songwriter Readers Weigh In

Last week, we asked you to pick your favorite breakup songs, as a sort of ode to Valentine’s Day, the holiday that lovers love and singles run from.

We got the idea from MTV, who posted their own, extremely lame list of breakup songs.

Well, we learned one thing we already knew — American Songwriter readers are smarter than MTV.

To make things interesting, a few of our editors also pitched in with ideas. Even my Mom and Dad chimed in, nominating Bob Dylan’s “It Ain’ Me, Babe.” Well played, Mom and Dad.

But for me, the best thing about this little excercise was having my memory jogged by one reader, “He’s History,” who nominated Sinead O’Connor’s immaculate cover of Elton John’s “No Sacrifice,” a performance I’d all but forgotten about. It’s from the 1991 Elton tribute, Two Rooms. I used to listen to my sister’s cassette copy all the time, before it was retired to some shoebox somewhere.

Good thing someone posted a YouTube video. That song will rip your heart out and serve it to you for breakfast.

Here’s your superior list of classic breakup songs:
