It’s official – last year, Coldplay were the most popular band on the planet.

The International Federation of the Phonographic Industry released their figures for worldwide records sales in 2008 Monday, which show that the band’s Viva La Vida or Death and All His Friends was the year’s best- selling album.

The band’s fourth album sold 2.1 million copies in the United States, and 6.8 million copies worldwide.

Black Ice, AC/DC’s first album in eight years, was the world’s second biggest seller. And then things get weird. Mamma Mia! The Movie Soundtrack, featuring Meryl Streep and Pierce Brosnan “singing” ABBA tunes, was the third best-selling album on the planet in 2008.

World, you are a strange place.
