Lawyers for guitar slinger Joe Satriani have vowed to serve legal papers to Coldplay at this Sunday’s Grammys, claiming the British band has thus far dodged all attempts to be contacted.
“We have warned [Coldplay’s] British lawyers that we have hired a fleet of process servers to dog the band everywhere they go this weekend in the hopes of serving them,” Satriani attorney Howard King told Fox News.
The reason for the lawsuit? Satriani swears Coldplay’s song “Viva La Vida,” which is up for both Song and Recording of the Year, borrows the melody from his 2004 instrumental track “If I Could Fly.”
Coldplay drummer Will Champion has called the charges “far-fetched and ridiculous,” and we are inclined to agree. However, Coldplay have also described themselves as “incredibly good plaigarists.” They probably regret that now.
UPDATE:
Satriani’s attorney King told the website MusicRadar:
“All of that has been averted now, Coldplay have hired one of the finest entertainment firms in California, which is probably good for all.”
As far as “Viva La Vida” taking home a Grammy this Sunday, King jokingly added:
“We hope Joe Satriani’s song wins a Grammy. In fact, we hope Joe has a very big Grammy night!”
