The Weinstein Company has picked up the John Lennon biopic, Nowhere Boy, now into its second week of shooting in Liverpool.
The memoir of Lennon’s mother Julia serves as the basis for the film, whose title comes from the Beatles song “Nowhere Man” from the album Rubber Soul. Tom Ortenberg, Weinstein Company President of Theatrical Films remarked, “The story of John Lennon’s childhood has never been told, and now Beatles fans will be able to gain insight into his fascinating life.” Set during Lennon’s teenage years, the film will focus on Lennon’s relationship with his Aunt Mimi and Mother Julia from age 15 until he left with the Beatles to play in Hamburg at age 19.
Aaron Johnson, known in America for his role in The Illusionist, will play Lennon. Kristin Scott Thomas, of Four Weddings and a Funeral and The English Patient fame will play Aunt Mimi. In addition, Thomas Sangster of Love Actually will play the young Paul McCartney. The pic will be the first feature film directed by Sam Taylor-Wood, who’s short film, Love You More, about two teens who connect over a Buzzcocks’ song, debuted at the 2008 Cannes Film Festival.
The Weinstein Company anticipates the initial release of the film sometime in 2009 in time for awards season consideration, with a wider theatrical release expected in January 2010.
