I believe in God and I like this song (XTC is one of my favorite bands). God isn't the problem in this world...it's people's ideas about God, particularly the idea that one's idea about God is the only right idea. And having no sense of humor, doubt, or irony, which leads to wars, intolerance, and, at best, self-righteousness.

The irony of writing a letter to God to say you don't believe in him was not lost on Partridge, I'm sure. He's a poet.

Sounds like a bit of the same attitude that a whole lot of the world is getting more and more used to today--Anti-God. Anti-Jesus..........GIVING GOD no credit for anything but blaming him for everything folks don't like. Believe me, we need more of the Lord's influence on things--not less of his influence.

I love this song. But, as agnostic as I am, I always felt that Andy Partridge was playing a trick on us. I mean, why would you write a letter, or a song in this case, to god to tell him you don't believe in him? For me, the beauty in this song is in how he is grappling with a crisis of faith. And he wins, in my opinion.
