moogMoog is staying true to its analog roots in a world gone digital. The Little Phatty Stage II is a modern Minimoog Model D that has the digital chops to manage MIDI and store presets, all while maintaining a pure analog signal path. The editing controls are all analog potentiometers. That’s like saying it is made with real butter. Oh baby—it is real! Imagine taking the synthesizer that revolutionized music and equipping it with the ability to act as an all in one MIDI controller. MIDI over USB (or DIN) allows one to sync the Moog’s modulators and amazing arpeggiator function to the tempo of a clock source. If a more organic approach is desired, simply tap in the tempo and say goodbye to the grid. The control interface on this synth is remarkably intuitive. Scrolling through presets and adjusting them is extremely useful. I was excited to find an external input, which allows users to process audio through the Littly Phatty. Upon opening the box, I must have played the thing for a few hours before cracking the manual to see how to sync the arpeggiator to the tempo on my session. Once I did check out the manual, I was amazed at all the possibilities and standard of quality put into this device. The integrity of this solidly constructed piece of equipment speaks volumes. Marveling over these mind-numbing sounds is astonishing, but digging deep to explore the mass of possibilities the Little Phatty has to offer is truly rewarding.
