PRS_Sweet_16_LowBoutique amplifiers are chi-chi and usually exorbitantly priced, yet their glowing tubes seem to have infiltrated studios everywhere here in town. Paul Reed Smiths’ new Sweet 16 amplifier comes hand wired from Maryland and all 16 watts feel anything but trite and trendy. PRS has been delivering fantastic electric guitars to us since the middle eighties and now with endorsements from the likes of Derek Trucks, they seem to be gaining momentum as makers of sought-after amps as well. I have to say, after spending some time with the Sweet 16, its strength immediately lies in its compact nature and yet, deceptively huge sound. With its simple controls, (Volume, High, Mids, Lows, Reverb, Master) and a bright switch, it’s prepotency lies in the amps construction of quality material rather than unnecessary knobs. I was able to plug in a Gibson ES-335 and found the Sweet 16 sang right along with Chuck Berry.
