Lyric Of The Day: “Want”

rufus_wainwright

I don’t want to make it rain
I just want to make it simple
I don’t want to see the light
I just want to see the flashlight
I don’t want to know the answers
To any of your questions
I don’t want, no I really don’t want
To be John Lennon or Leonard Cohen
I just want to be my Dad
With a slight sprinkling of my mother
And work at the family store
And take orders from the counter
I don’t want to know the answers
To any of your questions
I don’t want, no I really don’t want
To be John Lithgow or Jane Curtain
But I’ll settle for love
Yeah, I’ll settle for love
Before I reached the gate
I realized I had packed my passport
Before security realized
I had one more bag left
I just want to know
If something’s coming for to get me
Tell me, will you make me sad or happy
And will you settle for love?
Will you settle for love?

- Written by Rufus Wainwright. Appears on the album Want One.

While the lyrics to this song are great, there are far stronger songs lyrically I think on this absolutely perfect album by one of the most talented songwriters and artists to emerge in decades. For example, ” Go or Go Ahead” :

So I will opt for the big white limo
    Vanity fairgrounds and rebel angels
Can’t be trusted with feathers so hollow
Heaven’s invention, steel eyed vampires of love
    ….But oh Medusa,
    Kiss me and crucify
    This unholy notion
Of the mythic power of love

Or, also on Want album, this little sublime snippet of “Movies of Myself”

    I’m looking for a reason, a person
A Saturday Evening Post first edition of Jesus,
A little bit of bacon never eaten by Elvis.
