The makers of the hit video game “Rock Band” have launched a new program, wherein bands can upload their own songs to the Rock Band Network store, which currently houses some 700 tracks. The project is currently in beta form. Musicians will need to download the full-feature editing suite, and will need a whole lot of patience: songs may take up to 30 to 40 hours to code. Once up, they’ll be ready for purchase via the Rock Band Network Store; artists will receive a 30% cut of sales.
Chicago jam rockers Umphrey’s McGee will be among the first established acts to take advantage. They’ve hired Andrew Buch, a former Harmonix Music Systems employee and Rock Band freelancer, to convert several tracks, including “1348” and “Miss Tinkles Overture.” Fans can buy these tracks, and others, within the next few months. The Rock Band Network releases are scheduled to be released in tandem with the new Xbox 360 system.
