PRS HOLLOWBODY

While some of the guitars we looked at in this issue’s electric guitar feature were recession friendly, this one trumps that trend, but also has a number of unique features that justify the heftier price tag. Lots of premium woods go into the PRS Hollowbody guitar, including a carved spruce top, curly maple back, mahogany sides and a rosewood fretboard. One of my favorite characteristics is the “wide-fat” neck, which, especially if you’re mostly an acoustic player, has a very easy feel. Before you even plug the guitar in it’s just an inspiring instrument to sit with and play songs. Once you do decide to go the whole hog, there is both an L.R. Baggs/PRS proprietary piezo system and two humbuckers. The two systems work independently or as a blend. The piezo system on its own captures the guitar’s natural acoustics, producing a bright tone akin to an actual acoustic, though more variable and with more dynamics. Switch to the humbuckers and you’ve got plenty of crunch. When you blend the piezo and the humbuckers you get it all at once, a unique sound that is quite hard to describe. Needless to say, the PRS Hollowbody is a very versatile instrument. LIST PRICE: $5,517.00
