In 2010, American Songspace’s first year partnering with the 19-year-old contest, three finalists were selected from our pool: Jo Ellen Doering in Bluegrass for the song “Whisper Sweet Goodbyes,” Lisa Torres in Country for the song “Alive,” and Shay Lovette in General for the song “Get It Right.”

American Songwriter was backstage at MerleFest in 2010 to report on the festival and the contest performance stage. We interviewed and recorded sessions with each of the four category winners, and featured them in a magazine article in our July/August issue.

At MerleFest 2011, CASC contest winners will again be invited to play their song for an American Songwriter session and be featured in the magazine.

Judging for the Chris Austin contest is based on a song’s originality, lyrics, melody and overall commercial potential. The 2010 contest entries were judged by a panel of songwriters, publishers, A&R directors, and booking agents in Nashville, Tennessee, while the on-site judges in Wilkesboro, North Carolina, included Wyatt Durrette, Laurelyn Dossett, and Rory Feek.
