Listen: Cowboy Junkies Cover Vic Chesnutt’s “See You Around”

Videos by American Songwriter

On January 18, Cowboy Junkies will release Demons, their tribute album to their late friend and sometime collaborator Vic Chesnutt. One of our favorite tracks from Demons is “See You Around,” which was the closing song on Chesnutt’s 1996 Capitol Records debut, About To Choke.

Over a cathartic chord progression, the depressed protagonist tells a “half-assed activist” that he doesn’t have time for the niceties, then threatens to “hang out all night in the familiar fluorescent light of Dunkin’ Donuts.” Sad, bitter, and believable, it’s an overlooked masterpiece from the Chesnutt canon.
