Listen: Phosphorescent Covers Leonard Cohen

Videos by American Songwriter

Our favorite motorcycle-riding, ’70s country rock-vibin’ band is back with a live cover of Leonard Cohen’s “Hey, That’s No Way To Say Goodbye,” off Cohen’s landmark debut album, Songs Of Leonard Cohen. Phos is no stranger to a good cover. We’ve seen the band take on a whole album of Willie Nelson tunes, and a stunning solo version of Lucinda Williams’ “Big Red Sun Blues” in our office. Cohen’s melancholy, lovesick poetry and wayward spirituality become a perfect vehicle for Houck’s supple voice. “I loved you in the morning, our kisses deep and warm, your hair upon the pillow like a sleepy golden storm.” Come to think of it – it’s a cover that wouldn’t have been out of place on To Willie.
