Listen: Robert Ellis, “What’s In It For Me”

Videos by American Songwriter

At South By Southwest, we were completely blown away by Houston’s Robert Ellis. We even caught a secret house show concert with his other band – the insanely bluesy soul-jazz outfit that shall remain nameless, in which Ellis plays bass – the night before his New West Records day party gig. We’ve included Ellis’ “Westbound Train” on our current Country Way sampler, and now here’s one more song from Photographs, Ellis’ debut LP, which comes out July 5. On “What’s In It For Me,” Ellis takes on the kind of ’60s country melody that Keith Richards and Gram Parsons would have sat together at the piano and played for hours. “Tell me just how much my clothes stink, ask me how much I’ve had to drink.”
