I was obsessed with this song. Charting its daily progress on the Top 40 was my introduction to the joys of statistics, lists, and hierarchically ranking things that are a matter of opinion–a habit that persists to this day. I also had the Spanish version (“Yo soy…Yo soy…”)

B-side: the second album I bought with my own money from working in the coal mines was Elton John’s Greatest Hits, which contained this still-amazing ballad.
