Videos by American Songwriter

Ronnie Milsap’s “Country Cut” Contest Finalist:

ARTIST: Tony Villiers

SONG: “If You Let Your Sweetheart Go”

BIRTHDATE: The song, way back in ’97. Me, way back in the 20th Century.

BIRTHPLACE: The song, somewhere in the back of my mind. Me, Northern Ireland.

AMBITIONS: To record LP #2.

TURN-OFFS: Finding something then losing it.

TURN-ONS: Losing something then finding it.

DREAM GIG: Playin’ tambourine, triangle or spoons for Bob Dylan. If that doesn’t work out I’ll make the tea or buy him a goldfish.

MOVIES I’VE SEEN MORE THAN ONCE: The Royal Tenenbaums, Midnight Cowboy, Pat Garrett and Billy the Kid, Don’t Look Back and The Last Waltz.

CELEBRITY CRUSH: Oh come on, is this for real? Okay, yesterday it was Loretta Lynn and Sophia Loren, today Diane Kruger and Laura Prepon. Tomorrow it could be anyone, but it’ll probably be Helen of Troy.

YOU KNOW YOU’RE IN LOVE WHEN: it’s too late.

5 THINGS EVERY MAN SHOULD OWN: Pen, paper, light bulb, Wayfarers and a fast getaway car.

WORDS TO LIVE BY: The road to hell is paved with good intentions.

I WROTE THIS SONG: I just wrote it down and sang it, it sorta just came to me like a vision, complete, like I was just the conduit. ‘Sweetheart’ was around a long time before me.

Tony is among the 25 finalists in Ronnie Milsap’s “Country Cut” Contest. The winner will have their song recorded by the country music legend and placed on his upcoming album due this Fall.
