Ronnie Milsap’s “Country Cut” Contest: A Q&A With Winner Allan Bullington

Over the summer American Songspace,  our networking site for songwriters, hosted Ronnie Milsap’s “Country Cut” Contest. Allan Bullington submitted a song he co-wrote with Larry Wayne Clark. What happened after that?

Congratulations on the win with your song, “What I Wouldn’t Give.” How did you hear about Ronnie Milsap’s “Country Cut” Contest?

I visit the American Songwriter website regularly, so I saw an announcement there.

Were you already a big fan of Ronnie’s?

Of course! Anyone who’s a fan of great singing has gotta be a fan of Ronnie Milsap!

Have you tried to get your music recorded by other performing artists in the past?

I’ve pitched some of my songs in Nashville and I’ve gotten a few holds, but never a Nashville cut. However, this was the first time I’ve ever entered a songwriting contest. It was quite a surprise to actually win.

Did you have a particular artist in mind when you wrote this song?

Not really. Larry and I knew we’d written a good commercial song so we were hopeful it would eventually get some attention in Nashville.

You’ve been writing songs for a while, how did you know “What I Wouldn’t Give” was the right song to submit for Ronnie’s consideration?

I have 3 or 4 songs in my catalog that might have fit Ronnie’s style. However, “What I Wouldn’t Give” sounded like it was made for him. It’s the only song I entered in the contest.

Your work with Larry Wayne Clark has proved successful in this case. Do you co-write often?

Not much. Besides writing this song with Larry, I’ve co-written a half-dozen songs with Nashville writers.

Do you typically write songs for yourself, as an artist?

I’ve written hundreds of songs in a variety of styles some can be heard on my YouTube page. I moved to NYC years ago to pursue my singer-songwriter career, but I gave up that pursuit when I became involved in animal welfare work. But I’ve always continued writing and recording songs in my home studio.

A song recorded by a country music legend is a great credit. What’s next?

First, I wish Ronnie lots of continued success with the track! As for me, I’m always working on writing and recording new songs. And I plan to enter more American Songspace contests!
