Next year, the female folksters in Red Molly with celebrate their tenth year together. It’s been a busy decade, filled with album releases and an average of 100 shows per year. Maybe that’s why the trio is just now getting around to releasing its first official music video.
Filmed at the Cape Cod Carousel Funhouse Arcade, “Hello Goodbye” captures a live performance by members Laurie MacAllister, Abbie Gardner and Molly Venter. Gardner, who won American Songwriter’s Lyric Contest in 2008, co-wrote the song with her father Herb Gardner, a jazz musician whose resume includes collaborations with Wynton Marsalis and Roy Eldridge.
“This is the first song I’ve written with my dad,” she says. “Naturally, it came out as a swing tune, since that’s the style he’s played since before I was born. The fun part was bringing that type of song to the band and seeing what type of modern harmonies and arrangement we could come up with.”
The result is pure Red Molly: jazzy one moment and twangy the next, with plenty of fingerpicked firepower to lace the thing together. Throw in a ragtime beat and some airtight vocal harmonies, and you’ve got a song that the Andrew Sisters might’ve sung if they ever performed at MerleFest.
