Singer-songwriter Jason Molina died on March 16, 2013 of natural causes. He was 39.

The Ohio musician first earned critical acclaim while recording under the name Songs: Ohia in 1996 and later in 2003 while performing with the Magnolia Electric Co. Some of Molina’s most praised albums include the self-titled Songs: Ohia (1997), Didn’t It Rain (2002), What Comes After The Blues (2005) and 2009’s Josephine. In November 2009, he released the collaborative album Molina and Johnson with Centro-matic’s Will Johnson. Molina played shows all over the world each year up until 2009 when he stopped touring to receive help for his alcoholism.

“Jason was a world class musician, songwriter & recording artist. He was also a beloved friend,” said his first record label, Secretly Canadian, in a statement.

“This is especially hard for us to share. Jason is the cornerstone of Secretly Canadian. Without him there would be no us — plain and simple . . . We’re going to miss Jason. He was generous. He was a one of a kind. And he had a voice unlike any other.”
