Channelling the groove-driven hooks of Steve Winwood and the raw emotion of Tears for Fears, with Moon Over Japan Brooklyn “tropical grit-pop” duo Ghost Beach manage to tap into urban synth-pop zeitgeist without sacrificing traditional musicality or authentic feeling.

ARTIST: Ghost Beach

SONG: Moon Over Japan

CURRENT LOCATION: Brooklyn, NY

HOMETOWN: New York City

TURN-ONS: analog synths and the beach

MOST ABSURD SHOW I’VE EVER PLAYED: Our first show ever as Ghost Beach was for a tattoo parlor’s work party in some bar in the east village and they had burlesque dancers. It was interesting

CRAZIEST PERSON I KNOW: Aren’t we all a little crazy?

HOW DO YOU WRITE SONGS?: We usually start with a vocal hook or a drum beat and build around that.

SONG I WISH I WROTE: “When You Were Young” by the Killers

THIS SONG’S STORY: (From Josh) This song was pretty unique in the way that it was put together. The original idea came out when i was testing out a new acoustic guitar at guitar center. Doc and I played through some of the vocal ideas with his poly 61 and we decided to make a sorta ballad. Originally, it was supposed to be much slower. After we went in with our friend Champagne to produce it, we arrived at the concept that became the final version after playing with some of his old digital synths. The production aesthetic was supposed to be our ode to tears for fears.
