Alabama, the best-selling band in country music, gets a thumbs up from the Americana crowd with High Cotton, a tribute album filled with performances by alt-country A-listers like Jason Isbell, Old Crow Medicine Show, Jessica Lea Mayfield and John Paul White. Lucero even stops by for a rusty-throated version of “The Closer You Get,” using the opportunity to show off their new horn section’s chops. “The closer you get, the further I fall,” goes the familiar chorus. It’s a heartbreaking song, but Lucero turns it into a punky, shuffling drinking tune, adding some tattooed grit to the original. Play that mountain music, boys.
