After playing the Newport Folk Festival earlier this year, Andrew Combs and Steelism headed back to East Nashville, where they booked some time at the local Toy Box Studio. Combs was looking to record “Emily,” a country-blues tribute to a dangerous woman. Steelism — a duo whose members, guitar player Jeremy Fetzer and pedal steel wiz-kid Spencer Cullum Jr., pull double-duty as members of Combs’ backing band — wanted to track “China Plate,” an instrumental workout steeped in Telecaster twang, Fender funk, and the sort of western psychedelia that fills most Quentin Tarantino film soundtracks. The result? A split 7” featuring both songs, which you can stream below.

You can pre-order the record here.
