After opening for artists like Stevie Wonder and Arcade Fire and collaborating with The Kills, The Black Angels, Cowboy and Indian and Leopold and His Fiction, Austin, Texas-based songwriter Jazz Mills introduces her self-titled debut EP, due November 12.

Mixing bubblegum pop and sounds from a bygone era, Mills creates a sound unique to 21st century indie music. On the first track of the EP, “Little Baby,” Mills croons innocently about love out of reach, and “Meet My Father” is just as pure, with lyrics like, “Can’t you tell that I need somehow your attention / by the way that I flirt and bat my eyes?” Her style is reminiscent of the ’50s and ’60s, and her angelic voice is comparable to the quirky tone of Zooey Deschanel.

“Recording this EP was very humbling and empowering for me,” Mills says. “It was humbling because I got to work with a producer and musicians who seemed so far out of my league, but they were so supportive and professional. It was empowering for me to realize that I did have something to offer the world through my voice.”
