Steve Earle Launches Camp Copperhead Songwriting Camp

Wanna become a hardcore troubadour? Maybe you should consider hitting up Camp Copperhead, a new songwriting camp running from July 7-11 hosted by none other than Steve Earle.

Videos by American Songwriter

Earle taught his first course in 2000, leading a group of pickers and singers through the rights and wrongs of songwriting at Chicago’s Old Town School of Folk Music. 12 years later, he did the same at Jorma Kaukonen’s Fur Peace Ranch workshop in the Appalachian foothills. He’ll head north for the Camp Copperhead sessions, though, setting up shop at the Full Moon Resort in upstate New York. The camp has enough room for 100 students, and Earle will be the sole instructor there.

Each day will focus on a different aspect of songwriting, with lessons in the morning and workshops in the afternoon. After dinner, a series of open mic sessions will allow the bravest students to show off their new tunes. Meals, classes and lodging are included in the ticket price… and we imagine Earle will be a pretty cool camp counselor.

If Irish music is more your thing, The Chieftains are putting on a five-day event dubbed The Celtic Sessions at Gideon Putnam Resort in Saratoga Springs, New York from July 7-11. Guitarist and songwriter Ry Cooder will be the special guest.
