“Hickory On The Fire”
John Pawlak
La Crescenta, California

In southern Indiana they’re all scattered ‘cross the land
And my Daddy keeps a hundred acre grove
We work to farm the lumber and we cut it all by hand
Splittin’ logs to feed every country stove

I love hickory on the fire
A smoke that smells so sweet
A flame that never tires
Keeps me warm on rainy days and long winter nights
So I think I’ll lay another piece of
Hickory on the fire

She flew in from Chicago and we jumped the back roads home
To meet my friends and all my family
That city girl’s been achin’ to leave everything she knows
For a simple life that’ll let her heart run free

She loves hickory on the fire
A smoke that smells so sweet
A flame that never tires
Keeps her warm on rainy days and long winter nights
She says Baby, won’t you lay another piece of
Hickory on the fire

She walked away from livin’ large
I walked away from livin’ alone
We took a chance, we took charge
And we’re building us a Hickory home
We love hickory on the fire

A smoke that smells so sweet
A flame that never tires
Keeps us warm on rainy days and long winter nights
She says baby won’t you lay another piece
Baby won’t you lay just one more piece
So I think I’ll lay another piece of
Hickory on the fire
