John Statz is an Americana/Folk artist out of Denver, Colorado. John writes the kind of songs that float through your mind, seeking purpose and stay nestled in your thoughts long after listening. The result of his work with fellow Midwesterner Jeffrey Foucault is Tulsa. John states that Tulsa “feels like how I was always supposed to make a record”. Be sure to check it out on March 10th!

ARTIST: John Statz

SONG: Tulsa”

BIRTHDATE: 5/11/84

HOMETOWN: Waunakee, Wisconsin

CURRENT LOCATION: Denver, Colorado

AMBITIONS: I would just like to be able to do this for the rest of my life, make records, play in front of nice audiences, come home and tend my garden and cook in my trusty cast-iron skillet.

TURN-OFFS: reality television, khakis, snowmobiles, hip new line-around-the-block breakfast joints

TURN-ONS: presidential biographies, blue jeans, cross-country skis, old fashioned greasy spoons

DREAM GIG: Is Red Rocks too cliché?

FAVORITE LYRIC: Currently: “I have seen the David, I’ve seen the Mona Lisa, too. I have seen Doc Watson play Columbus Stockade Blues.” Dublin Blues by Guy Clark.

CRAZIEST PERSON I KNOW: My grandmother (on my mother’s side) biked around France by herself in the 1930’s, and was also a championship high-diver. She has since passed, but she lived crazy large for those days.

SONG I WISH I WROTE: Hayward Williams’ “I Know It Now”

5 PEOPLE I’D MOST LIKE TO HAVE DINNER WITH: Bob Dylan, John Quincy Adams, Kathleen Edwards (ahem, date?), Neil deGrasse Tyson, Steven Rinella

MY FAVORITE CONCERT EXPERIENCE: Jeffrey Foucault and Peter Mulvey at the Café Carpe when I was 19, it pretty much started me on this path.

I WROTE THIS SONG: Thinking back on a less-than-glamorous tour stop through Tulsa early on in my career. It turns out that casinos are ALWAYS a bad idea.
