Videos by American Songwriter

ARTIST: Doby Watson

SONG: “Pickup”

HOMETOWN: Kansas City, Missouri

CURRENT LOCATION: Kansas City, Missouri

AMBITIONS: Stay alive and continue writing.

TURN-OFFS: Prejudice, sports, contemporary pop music, chain restaurants, plastic.

TURN-ONS: Beer, Fleetwood Mac, BBQ, social justice, overcast skies, wicker.

DREAM GIG: A well-attended house show where no one has a cellphone or anything to talk about during my set.

FAVORITE LYRIC: Too many to pick a true favorite – generally, anything John Prine wrote.

SONG I WISH I WROTE: Anything John Prine wrote.

5 PEOPLE I’D MOST LIKE TO HAVE DINNER WITH: I’d preferably have dinner with my partner – but if there were 5 famous people I wanted an excuse to meet, I’d probably pick Liz Harris, Neil deGrasse Tyson, Penny Rimbaud, Patricia Bragg and Ian MacKaye.

MY FAVORITE CONCERT EXPERIENCE: A few years back while watching Damien Jurado play at a dive bar in Lawrence, Kansas, his mic cut out and the sound guy had left during to have a drink somewhere else, so Jurado unplugged his guitar, moved his chair to the middle of the room and played the rest of his set there, un-amplified.

I WROTE THIS SONG BECAUSE… I happened upon the riff one day and wrote words to it.
