Videos by American Songwriter

ARTIST: Patrick J. Sylvest

SONG: “Collard Greens”

HOMETOWN: Gramercy, Louisiana

CURRENT LOCATION: Thibodaux, Louisiana

AMBITIONS: Take my Original Louisiana Folk Songs show to Carnegie Hall, Radio City Music Hall, The Fillmore, The Grand Ole Opry, Royal Albert Hall and Broadway!

TURN-OFFS: The completely and utterly convinced!

TURN-ONS: Peace-loving creatures!

DREAM GIG: Share the stage with John Denver, Dan Fogelberg, or James Taylor.

FAVORITE LYRIC: “All you need is Love, Love is all you need.”

SONG I WISH I WROTE: “Rain in Durango” by Guy Clark

5 PEOPLE I’D MOST LIKE TO HAVE DINNER WITH: Jesus Christ, Ghandi, Mother Theresa, Genghis Khan, and Chris Thile.

MY FAVORITE CONCERT EXPERIENCE: The Punch Brothers at the Fayetteville Roots Festival in 2015! They were surreal!

I WROTE THIS SONG BECAUSE…  My Father’s Memoires, entitled, “Collard Greens,” richly and colorfully documented events and circumstances surrounding”‘Growing up on a Subsistence Farm in North Louisiana during the Great Depression.” Writing a folk song commemorating this was an obvious necessity for his songwriter son. Looking back, “Collard Greens” should’ve been the title of the album!
